How a Handmade Bowl is Created
Every piece of the pottery process begins with a simple ball of clay. From that moment, the transformation begins.
Step 1: Pottery Process, Preparing the Clay
The clay is wedged by hand to remove air bubbles and ensure an even consistency. This step is essential for strength and durability.
Step 2: Throwing on the Wheel
The clay is centred on the wheel and shaped carefully by hand. The form begins to rise as the walls are pulled upwards, creating the bowl or mug shape.
This is where each piece develops its unique character.
Step 3: Pottery Process, Drying and Trimming
Once shaped, the piece is left to dry until leather hard. It is then trimmed to refine the base and perfect the proportions.
Step 4: First Firing
The pottery is bisque fired in the kiln, transforming fragile clay into hardened ceramic.
Step 5: Glazing
Glaze is applied by hand. This is where the coastal inspiration comes to life — layered blues, greens, pinks and earthy tones blend naturally in the kiln.
Step 6: Pottery Process, Final Firing
The glaze firing is where the magic happens. Colours deepen, textures emerge and the final finish is revealed.
No two pieces ever turn out exactly the same — and that’s the beauty of handmade ceramics.
Whether it’s a large serving bowl or a small tankard, each item goes through this careful, hands-on process before reaching your home.
