About Susy Ward, Studio Potter in Cornwall
Susy Ward has been working with clay since the late 1990's. From the heart of Cornwall, she creates distinctive ceramics that speak to those who value thoughtfulness, subtle individuality and skilled craftsmanship. Her studio practice is based at Krowji in Redruth, where she produces a refined selection of short series and one-off pieces.
With a background in Ceramic Design and Technology, Susy earned a Distinction in her HND at Cornwall, followed by a degree course at Falmouth College of Art. This technical foundation underpins everything she creates. Her true passion lies in exploring the relationship with the raw ingredients so that every piece becomes a rest. Every item begins with testing – of materials, function and surface, which often leads to an entirely new body of work.

Susy is not a production potter. Instead, each collection is developed in small runs or as exclusive lines. Her studio output ranges from functional tableware such as mugs, bowls and plates to larger sculptural or exhibition pieces. Her work is well known in Ceramics Cornwall circles, especially among those who appreciate personal, tactile and timeless pieces that become part of the rhythm of everyday life.
Each summer, Susy airs her work at the Stithians Show, where she reconnects with collectors and meets new clients. She enjoys listening to what people are looking for and often develops bespoke commissions based on those conversations. Many of these pieces go on to inspire others, with word of mouth leading to further requests. No two commissions are ever the same. Each item is made in direct response to someone’s needs and always reflects their story.

Susy is equally passionate about sharing her knowledge. She regularly runs workshops from her ground floor studio at Krowji, and many of her former students have gone on to teach in colleges and schools across the UK. She has worked with local councils on projects such as Iron Age pottery workshops in Tehidy Woods, engaging young and old with heritage and craft through hands-on learning. Susy has also worked closely with Shallal Studio, Susy's next door neighbour at Krowji and Susy believes she has learned as much from them as they did from her,. Such talent.
A selection of her more functional ceramics is now available to buy online, carefully chosen to be post-friendly and designed to suit modern living. Exhibition pieces remain available only at events or directly from the studio, where visitors are always welcome, ideally by appointment. Visiting is not only a chance to buy but also an opportunity to connect, talk about ideas and see where each piece begins.
